Pine Bush dominates OCIAA swimming

The Pine Bush girls’ swimming and diving team continued its dominance on Friday with a resounding first-place finish at the Orange county Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I championship on Friday at Washingtonville High School.

The Bushmen finished with 452 points, qualifying one swimmer to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet. They also set two meet records in the relays.

Antonia Licardi, who was seeded behind Valley Central’s Allison Armistead in the 50-yard freestyle, outraced her with a state-qualifying time of 24.56. Armistead was a half-second behind her in 25.08. Valley Central’s Naihomy Garcia was fifth and Pine Bush’s Cora Mance was sixth, with Sophia Licardi taking ninth. Pine Bush’s Katie Webster was 12th and Grace Satriano was 14th.

Pine Bush got off to a fast start, setting a new meet record in the 200-yard medley relay as Samantha Hufcut, Mackenzie Gula, Antonia Licardi and Elishka Hajek finished in 1:49.66, breaking the mark of 1:51.29 set in 2012 by Newburgh Free Academy.

The same team set a new meet record – 1:38.91 – in the 200-yard freestyle relay, breaking the mark set by Monroe-Woodbury in 2014. Valley Central finished third.

Overall, Pine Bush won 11 of the meet’s 12 events. The only event Pine Bush did not win was diving.

Pine Bush took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle with Madaghan O’Shea finishing in 1:59.12 and Samantha McKee taking second. Valley Central’s Grace Wienchowski was fourth and Cali White was 14th.

Pine Bush’s Mackenzie Gula won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.84.

Antonia Licardi won her second meet when she took the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.76 and Valley Central’s Naihomy Garcia took third and Mackenzie Dickman was fifth. Pine Bush’s Sara Ippolito was ninth.

Hajek and Armistead finished first and second in the 100-yard freestyle as Hajek improved on her already state qualifying time with a 53.71. Armistead was nearly 2 seconds behind her with a 55.33 and Hufcut was third in 55.55. Mance and Webster were ninth and 12th respectively. White was 13th.

O’Shea won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.36 and Wienchowski took second. McKee was third and Ippolito was seventh. Pine Bush’s Ashley Martin took 15th.

Pine Bush took the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke as Hufcut won the race in 1:00.39. Hajek finished second and Sophia Licardi was third. Amanda Egan was 10th and Gillian Valdez was 11th. Brooke Horneck was 15th and Nina Camacho was 16th.

Gula won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.47 and Dickman was fifth. Valley Central’s Trinity Vohl was 12th and Pine Bush’s Sadie DeGeorge was 14th. The Vikings’ Lilyna Bonitz took 15th.

Pine Bush’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of McKee, Mance, Sophia Licardi and Madaghan O’Shea finished the day with a win with a time of 3:44.00. Valley Central was sixth.

Pine Bush’s Ella Galloway was eighth in diving with 357.05 points.
