Sewer rate hearing set

There is good news and bad news in Maybrook. The good news is village water tax rates are not rising this year. The bad news is the sewer tax rates will.

The village board will hold a public hearing 7 p.m., Mon., Feb. 24, on the new rates which would add $21.25 to an average resident’s yearly sewer tax bill.

“Reveues are short so we have to raise the rate,” Mayor Dennis Leahy said. State law requires that a municipality’s revenues for water and sewer systems must equal expenses. “Our auditor said there is a deficit in sewer revenues so we have to raise the rate.”

The current water and sewer rates are $4.15 per 1,000 gallons. The water rate will remain at $4.15. The sewer rate would rise to $5 per 1,000 gallons. The average residential property uses 25,000 gallons a year. For that property, the current sewer rate would carry an annual bill of $103.75. The new proposed rate would increase that to $125.

The sewer rate would also rise proportionally for business and outside-of-village users.
