Viking girls top Highland in overtime

When Valley Central’s girls’ lacrosse team played Highland at home Wednesday, April 10, the Vikings trailed 6-4 at the half.

And the second half opened with a goal by Valley Central’s Katie Crofoot before Highland’s Eliz Fino answered back with a goal. Crofoot and Fino would continue the lead in the back and forth battle for their teams as the half closed in on the final minute when Valley Central tied it 10-10.

It stayed tied at the end of regulation. Highland took the opening draw but could not score. Valley Central took the back to their end of the field, and Crofoot ended the contest with a goal in the final minute of the three-minute overtime period and an 11-10 victory for the Vikings.

“It was really intense,” said Crofoot.

And Crofoot said her team was energized heading into overtime after coming back in the second half to tie the game.

“We had our heads in the game a lot,” she said. “We just wanted to come back and get the win.”

Crofoot led Valley Central with five goals, and Grace Palczewski scored a pair. Gabi Morelli also scored a pair for the Vikings, and Gabbi Rios and Chloe Baranger also scored a goal for Valley Central.

Fino scored eight goals to lead Highland, and Nicole Iapoce and Emma Beck each helped with a goal in the loss for the Huskies.
