Kudos to Walden Girl Scout Troop 285 who have been working on their Silver Award Project from October 2018-September 2019.

At that time they will have completed their 10 hours of leadership 50 hours of community work on this project at the Wallkill Valley Cemetery under the supervision of “Mr. Brant”, Brant Winum, Superintendent of the Cemetery and Ranaye Corley and Lourdes Nieves, Troop Co-Leaders.

Girl Scout troops have come in as well as people from the community at various times to assist the troop in achieving this award. The Silver Award is the second highest award that you can achieve from Girl Scouts. Their aim was to clean and renew soldier’s plaques which entailed laying new gravel down, repositioning the plaques’ and cleaning them. The scouts also cleaned two monuments. At the base of the monuments, flowers were planted to renew their beauty.

The scouts have been very pleased with the work they have done and feel that this project will help “Mr. Brant” maintain the soldiers’ graves, enrich the cemetery and let the soldiers’ families know how thankful the Scouts are for these soldiers who fought to keep America safe.

There will be an award ceremony for Girl Scout Troop 285 in October, the date to be determined. Troop 485 Marcia Hocot Troop will thereafter visit the cemetery twice a year and continue this project. Troop 285 gives Brant Winum special thanks for his guidance, Franco’s Italian Restaurant for its generous lunch donation and all who have assisted in this special project.
