Walden Humane Society calls 2019 a successful year

The Humane Society of Walden had a successful 2019. Many pets were adopted and events were hosted.

“[2019] was outstanding,” said Kate Calderin, shelter manager. “Most months we averaged about 50 or 60 adoptions.”

Several improvements were made to the humane society last year. A large canopy was put up over the back outdoor kennels. Repairs were made to the doors and fencing of the indoor kennels. An expansion was made to the outdoor dog park, dividing it into two sections, so meet and greets can be done.

The shelter also hosted several successful fundraising efforts last year. The penny social, held on Nov. 9, was among them. Gift baskets were raffled off and homemade refreshments were available for purchase. All of the event’s proceeds directly supported the cats and dogs in their care.

Another successful fundraising effort was held on July 13. Moroney’s Harley-Davidson of New Windsor joined Angry Orchard and the Humane Society of Walden for their third annual Bad to the Bone: Cruise for a Cause. There was live music from Dan Brother and Ciarra Fragale. In addition, there was delicious food for purchase courtesy of Amuzae. There were several different vendors on site selling homemade soups, local jewelry and animal accessories and needs. Donations were taken at this event to help the Humane Society of Walden.

Back in February, the Humane Society of Walden hosted a luau-themed $5,000 raffle party. The event also featured a buffet as well as beer and wine. Proceeds from the ticket purchases went to the Humane Society of Walden.

This year’s $5,000 raffle party will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Newburgh Elks Lodge, 356 Washington Street in Newburgh from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at waldenhumane.org/5k-raffle-party/. Registration ends on Feb. 21. Tickets are $50 each and admit two to the party. Buffet-style food and drinks are included in the ticket cost.

The shelter still has about 80 cats and 20 dogs in need of homes. Those who are looking to adopt a new furry friend can go to waldenhumane.org. Once on the site, go to the adoption process tab and click adoption application. When looking under the adoption process tab, you can also browse pets available for adoption at the shelter by clicking adoptable pets.

“There are so many animals out there in need of a home,” Calderin said. “It’s rewarding for the animal and the adopter. They give you so much love in return.”

The Humane Society of Walden is located at 2489 Albany Post Road in Walden. They are open every day from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
