Wallkill Lions Club hosts drive-through Easter

Posted

The Wallkill Lions Club along with volunteer help from the Wallkill Senior High School Leo’s Club hosted a drive-thru Easter event Saturday at Popp Memorial Park in the Hamlet of Wallkill.

Children were able to get their photograph taken with the Easter Bunny and the Lions Club mascot. They were also treated to a goody bag featuring candy as well as a chocolate bunny from Hudson Valley Chocolates of the Hamlet of Wallkill. Sal Patella, president of the Wallkill Lions Club, was pleased with how the event went.

“It’s very efficient,” he said. “We have the cars lining up appropriately. The families are getting out one family at a time and are maintaining social distancing. We have the club members and the leos working together hand in hand to make sure things are going smooth.”

Patella was also delighted by the turnout, as close to 100 children attended the event.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wallkill Lions Club hosted an annual Easter egg hunt at the Wallkill Public Library. The pandemic has caused the club to restructure its events in order to limit contact between individuals. They have conducted several drive-thru events either to raise funds for the community or provide fun for children. These events include a barbecue that raised over $3,000 for the Wallkill Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry as well as a trick-or-treating event. Though this year’s drive-thru Easter event was well-received, Patella hopes to host the club’s traditional Easter festivities next year.

“We’re happy to be able to provide something for the families in the community this year,” he said. “We look forward to next year hopefully having an Easter egg hunt.”
