“For 22 years, Chief Gebert has devoted himself to the town of Cornwall, its residents and the members of his department, with his leadership, dedication and friendship.”
And with one that, one final radio call broadcast for the communications desk inside the Cornwall Police Department, Chief Joseph Gebert, escorted by his wife Megan, walked through the doors of the police station and into retirement.
Waiting for him along the path were police officers from the CPD and other area police agencies, firefighters, fellow Town of Cornwall employees, local elected officials, and even a few spectators who wandered over from the Farmers Market. Most importantly, waiting at the end of that long line of well-wishers were his children, Natalie and Jack, who, with their friends and family surprised the chief with an explosion of colorful confetti.
Hanging overhead was Highland Engine’s massive American flag, suspended from one of the department’s trucks.
That final radio call noted that Gebert has “an unwavering commitment” to the town he calls home.
“On behalf of the Town of Cornwall and the many residents you have served we extend our sincere gratitude to Chief Gebert for his 22 years of honorable service and wish him a long, healthy and well-deserved retirement. Congratulations Chief Gebert and thank you.”
There was applause, hugs, a few tears, and lots of well wishes from the spectators. The chief never stopped smiling through it all.
