Alternate parking suspended for parts of Liberty Street

The City of Newburgh has granted an extension of time for substantial completion of construction work for the Liberty Street Streetscape Improvement Project.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, the council approved several extensions for the project that was supposed to have been completed by July 14, but now isn’t expected to be completed before September 30. City officials blamed the discovery of underground vaults and staircases and other conditions that took longer than expected.

Due to the extension of time granted, alternate side of the street parking rules will be suspended on Liberty Street from Broadway to Renwick Street, beginning August 10, and extending through September 30. Regular restrictions will be back in effect October 1, 2021.

At Monday’s meeting, the council also fielded complaints from several Liberty Street business owners who said the disruption caused by the construction was hurting their business.

City Manager Todd Venning said the city will look into helping businesses in that area get small grants to compensate for business lost due to the construction.
