Newburgh passes budget, board president defeated

The Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s 2023-2024 Budget of $335.4 million passed on Tuesday, May 16 at the conclusion of the polling period. The unofficial count shared by the district clerk’s office was 1129 votes yes and 417 votes no. Three new candidates Letitia McDaniel Politi, Deborah Bouley and Ramiro Burgarelli received the highest number of votes in this year's election. Incumbent Mark Levinstein received the highest number of votes out of the other two incumbent candidates. 

For the Newburgh Board of Education candidate elections, the top three candidates with the highest number of votes will serve a three-year term on the board and the fourth candidate will fill the unexpired term for one year. The unofficial results of the Board of Education candidates see the top three candidates Letitia McDaniel Politi with 1,041 votes, Deborah Bouley with 887 votes and Ramiro Burgarelli with 790 votes. Incumbent Mark Levinstein placed fourth with 652 votes. Incumbent and current Board President Carole Mineo received 517 votes and incumbent William Walker received 450 votes. New candidates Ray Harvey received 464 votes, Dennis Grant received 440 votes and Shade Burks received 329 votes. 

The unofficial results of the Newburgh Free Academy’s Main Locker Room at the cost of $2.57 million passed with 1044 votes yes and 468 votes no. The Newburgh Free Library’s Budget of $5.73 million passed with unofficial vote counts of 1219 votes yes and 316 votes no. The library’s Local History Room proposition at the cost of $243,250 also passed. Unofficial counts were 1154 votes yes and 361 votes no.
