The Newburgh City Council approved on January 24 a feasibility study for the Delano-Hitch Stadium.

The goal for the City of Newburgh is to possibly bring a minor league baseball team to the stadium and revitalize the surrounding facilities to increase tourism, interest and revenue for the city.

“I don’t want to speak for my colleagues but I believe that we’re all in support of transforming our baseball field into something for a minor league team,“ Councilman Anthony Grice said. “We do understand that that is a huge undertaking. We want community input.”

The city hosted several minor league baseball teams in the 1990s, but the region’s only Minor League team at the present time is the Hudson Valley Renegades, based in Wappingers Falls.

Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde has spoken with Senator James Skoufis and Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson who have discussed with her that the entire area at Delano-Hitch is being looked at to be improved through the feasibility study.

“You see it [Delano-Hitch Stadium and park] as soon as you come into our city,” Monteverde said. “For me it’s not just about baseball but it’s about this entire area.”

During the regular work session last week on Thursday, Michelle Kelson Corporation Counsel had presented the resolution to the council but asked them to consider concerns about payment and the reliability of data about the city. One concern that came forward, according to Kelson, was that the city would need to cover the cost of the study which is $50,000.
