The Newburgh City Council will look to vote on a Local Law to repeal and replace Chapter 240 “Rental Properties,” Article III entitled “Prohibition of Eviction without Good Cause.” The legislation has received both support and opposition in the city.
Good Cause Eviction is a law that provides protections for residents from eviction without a good cause or reason from their current landlord. The law adds protections for tenants from rent increases but failures to pay rent, overall property damage and violation of agreements can lead to eviction. The Good Cause Eviction law went into effect in New York State in April 2024.
The resolution is planned to appear on Thursday, September 5 at the city work session. The next regularly scheduled city council meeting will be held on Monday, September 9 at 7 p.m.
