Claudia C. Vargas, of the Town of Newburgh, entered into rest on Friday, January 22, 2021. She was 75.

Daughter of the late Arthur and Virginia (Wirth) Jefferies, she was born on April 7, 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Claudia, a longtime area resident, was a graduate of SUNY New Paltz and former bilingual teacher for the Miami Dade and the Detroit School Districts. She was a member of the Newburgh Yacht Club, and was a volunteer teacher with the Nora Cronin Presentation Academy  in Newburgh. Claudia was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s and Our Lady of the Lake Chapel, where she was a former CCD teacher. A woman of deep faith she was a member of the Renew Prayer Group and TAPS.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Dr. Felix L. Vargas, at home; three daughters, Michelle (Michael) Herbst of Geneva, IL, Suzanne Vargas and Claudia Anne Vargas, both of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Susan Morgan and Carolyn Martin; two brothers, Arthur Jefferies and Douglas Jefferies; brother and sister-in-laws, Jose (Loli) Vargas and Emilio (Mirtica) Blanco; eight grandchildren, Victoria Herbst, Isabella Herbst, Maria Anastasi, Joe Herbst, Chris Anastasi, Carmen Anastasi, Joshua Morris and Delilah Morris; along with beloved nieces, nephews, goddaughters and a host of caring friends.

In addition to her parents, Claudia is predeceased by a brother, Charles Jefferies.

Visitation will take place, Tuesday, January 26, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh,.

Due to the continued public health concerns, please know that there is an occupancy limitation which may cause a wait time, please be respectful of your time visiting. Facial covering must be worn in the funeral home at all times, and social distancing must be practiced.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am, Wednesday, January 27, 2021 and has been changed to St. Patrick’s Church, Newburgh, NY.

Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
