Evocative Abstractions at Gardiner Library

Gardiner Library hosts “Evocative Abstractions” Art Show by Marcy Elise Bernstein through November. The reception is Sunday, October 23 at 4 p.m.

Marcy Bernstein’s paintings are an evocative combination of paint, photographic abstractions and wax on distressed surfaces. Stripes and bars manifest themselves in Bernstein’s painterly hands to visuals of strong, primitive impulse. The lush slashing brushstrokes, aberrant color and the strong primitive drawing invite us to look inward. These are large, dreamy paintings with allusions to nature, procreation and creativity.

Bernstein’s colorful, anthropomorphic abstractions bend geometric shapes just enough to reference the human body interacting with surrounding space. The textures are inspired by crumbling and decaying architecture, textures and patterns in nature and layers of peeling paint. These paintings speak to the resilience, beauty and persistence of the human spirit.

Marcy holds a BFA in Painting (with honors) from Parsons School of Design, a teaching certification from Bank Street College of Education and an MFA in Painting from SUNY New Paltz. In 2015, Bernstein had a life-changing bicycle accident that brought her 30-year career, teaching painting and photography in a New York inner-city high school, to a close. However, this was not an ending but a transformation.

Marcy founded Roost Studios and Art Gallery, a non-profit for the arts, in 2016. In her role as Executive Director, Marcy coordinates, curates and produces community art events, fulfilling a mission to build community through the arts. The library is located at 133 Farmer’s Turnpike in Gardiner.
