Goldbacks 5th at OCIAA championships

The Newburgh Free Academy 1,600-meter relay team finished first, leading the Goldbacks to a fifth-place finish at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championship track and field meet on Saturday at Goshen High School.

The team of Kendy Georges, DeJuan McKenzie, Xaiver Williams and David Pinnock finished with a time of 3:26.71.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Devin Batelic, Georges, Jordan Hidalgo, and Joseph Gaito finished second and the 400-meter relay team of Anthony Burnett, Johnathan Darker, Quinston Leathers and McKenzie took fourth.

The Goldbacks scored a total of 49 points. Monroe-Woodbury won the meet with 130 points. The girls’ team finished 11th with 14 points. Cornwall won the girls’ team title.

Anthony Barrett was second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.76. Burnett was fifth in both the 400- and 110-meter hurdles.

Devin Batelic was fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:45.05.

Jun Rivas was fifth in the long jump, reaching 19-4.25 with Bryce Buxton taking eighth in 19-1.

In the girls’ meet, Denisha Cruz was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.52, and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.75.

The 400-meter relay team was fourth, while the 1,600-meter relay team took seventh with respective times of 52.23 and 4:25.15.
