The Newburgh Free Academy boys’ lacrosse team closed the gap in the second quarter of Thursday’s road game against the Pine Bush Bushmen, but a big fourth quarter propelled the Bushmen to an 18-7 victory.

The Goldbacks fell behind 7-1 after the first quarter but had a better performance in the second when they closed the Bushmen’s lead to 8-4 in the second quarter.

The Bushmen scored the first goal of the second quarter, but a goal with 8:36 left in the second quarter starting a string of three straight Newburgh goals.

Mike Vasquez, who led the Goldbacks with four goals and one assist, connected with 4:64 left in the second to cut Pine Bush’s lead to 8-3, and then he assisted Cole Mullarkey’s goal with 2:02 left in the quarter to close to within four goals.

That was, however, as close as Newburgh would get as Pine Bush outscored the Goldbacks, 5-2, in the third and then 5-0 in the fourth quarter to put the Goldbacks away.

The Goldbacks were on the cusp of falling behind by 12 points when a goal by Danny DeGroodt put the Goldbacks behind by 11 goals. Another Pine Bush goal would have made the clock run continuously.

However, Newburgh’s Evan Hutchinson took that opportunity away with a goal with 7:02 remaining in the game.

Behind Vasquez, Angelo Reade scored two goals for the Goldbacks. Hutchinson and Mullarkey had one each. Damien Burns had two assists, while A.J. Gucciardo and Matt Wood had one assist each.

Anthony Vasquez had 12 saves in the cage.

Evan Jaloszynski led the Bushmen with seven goals and Danny DeGroodt had four goals and two assists. Tyler Ostrom and Dominick Ciarelli combined for 12 saves.
