Grocery store, new facade proposed for town center

The Town of Newburgh Planning Board voted on May 16 to classify the project Town Center Plaza-Front Facade as an amended site plan and granted architectural review board approval. Adjoiners notices will also need to be sent out by the town.

The Big Lots retail facility at the Town Center Plaza along North Plank Road is going to be replaced by a new business, Fresh Town Markets. Several planning board members were in favor of the design of the project with the proposed clock tower on the west side of the site.

Planning board members did bring forward concerns about the traffic impacts due to the Ready Coffee shop adjacent to the site creating stacking, new trash enclosures were requested to be included and overall site cleanup would need to be acted on by the applicant.

The plaza, built in the 1970s, originally housed an A&P grocery store and a Mason’s Department store. In later years it was home to a CVS Pharmacy, but that closed when the store was acquired by Walgreens. Other current tenants include an Auto Parts store and a hardware store.
