Illegal dumping fines doubled in City of Newburgh

The Newburgh City Council unanimously approved an ordinance to double the fee for illegal dumping in the city. The minimum fee went from $500 to $1,000. The maximum fee is now $7,500.

The amendment came at the request of Councilman Anthony Grice.

“I know Corporation Counsel has been working very hard on this,” said City Manager Joseph Donat.

The fine will not be for littering, but for illegal dumping.

Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde said it will only work if people report those who are illegally dumping.

“If you see something, say something,” said Monteverde.

At the end of 2020, the Department of Public Works was able to have a new monthly bulk item pickup pilot program for the last Wednesday of each month. It was free of charge for residents and they were able to dispose of up to five bulk waste items after scheduling with the Department of Public Works.
