John J. Flanagan passed away peacefully at home with his son John and John’s wife Gloria by his side. The son of the late Francis J. & Eva G. Flanagan, he was born in Newburgh.

Jack grew up with his sister Ruth (predeceased) in Newburgh and attended St. Patrick’s School in Newburgh. He was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Church. Jack married his beloved wife, Catherine in St. Patrick’s Church on April 19, 1953. Catherine predeceased him in 2007.

Jack was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A devoted family man who was extremely proud of his Irish heritage, Jack is survived by his loving children Karen (Jerry) Whitaker of Mashpee, MA, John (Gloria) Flanagan of Cornwall, NY, and Kevin (Teresa) Flanagan of New Windsor, NY. Jack is also survived by six loving grandchildren, Erin Reynolds (Cory), Casey Whitaker, Kylie Whitaker, John Flanagan (Melissa), Caitlin Pinksten (Megan) and Ashley Flanagan. He is also survived by five precious great-grandchildren, Amelia, Doc, Tristan, Wyatt, and Shea. Additionally, Jack leaves behind sister-in-law Frances and her husband Lenny DeRobertis, his lifelong friend, as well as many nieces and nephews that he loved throughout his life.

Originally, Jack was a diehard fan of the NY Giants baseball and NY Giants football teams. He remained a NY football Giants fan his entire life and started rooting for the NY Mets when they came to be in 1962. If either of these teams have a good year, we will know why.

A celebration of his life will be held with a funeral mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Newburgh on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 10:00 am followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor, NY.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to his team at Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack’s memory to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., Meals on Wheels of Newburgh, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
