Orange County Legislator Kevindaryán Luján has announced he will seek re-election for a third term, continuing his tenure as the representative for District 6, which encompasses Newburgh.
“I am excited to announce my candidacy for a third term as your legislator for Newburgh,” Luján said in a statement. “As a proud son of Newburgh and a lifelong Democrat, I remain inspired by the resilience and love of our neighbors.”
Luján highlighted the challenges the district has faced during his tenure, including natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, housing and migrant crises, and calls for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion. He pledged to continue advocating for collaborative, bipartisan solutions to address these issues.
“I have continuously advocated for the needs and interests of our city, county, and our most vulnerable communities,” he said, emphasizing his efforts to prioritize people over politics.
Luján outlined several accomplishments during his time in office, including:
• Helping reduce the county budget and cut taxes, co-sponsoring a resolution in 2024 to reduce the budget by $2 million.
• Securing funding for infrastructure improvements, such as rebuilding Newburgh’s pier and boosting the local economy.
• Advocating for increased investment in the SUNY college system to expand workforce development programs and improve affordability.
• Working with local and state partners to introduce free public transportation in Newburgh, leading to record-breaking ridership and reduced pollution.
• Leading efforts to address the housing crisis by joining a bipartisan task force focused on affordable housing.
• Promoting environmental justice by supporting bans on plastic bags, protecting the Hudson River, and opposing fossil fuel projects.
• Advocating for racial equality and criminal justice reforms, including body cameras and diversity training for law enforcement.
• Opposing pay raises for elected officials and pushing for increased transparency by advocating for night meetings to improve public access.
Luján also emphasized his work to support asylum seekers during the recent migrant crisis in the Town of Newburgh.
“Being your Orange County Legislator has been the honor of a lifetime,” Luján said. “I want to see Newburgh move forward together.”
