Mount business students teach finance at Newburgh Armory

Posted

Finance students from Mount Saint Mary College’s School of Business recently worked with young students learning the concepts of financial literacy at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.

In the Seminar in Finance course taught by Thomas Fitzmaurice, assistant professor of Finance at the Mount, Mount students partnered with Rhinebeck Bank to develop and present an interactive experience for the young students, discussing a variety of topics from interest rates to credit card debt.

The senior Mount Finance students developed the presentation for the Armory’s Saturday Morning Enrichment Program.

Each year, Seminar in Finance includes a service component as part of its course requirements. In past years, students have worked with local non-profit partners such as Catholic Youth and Family Ministry (CYFM) in Garrison and the Religious of Jesus and Mary’s Bethany Spirituality Center in Highland Mills. The service requirement helps further the Mount’s commitment to community service.

“In our finance classes, we learn the importance of return on investment and maximizing shareholder value,” noted Fitzmaurice. “However, students need to realize that return isn’t always measured in dollars. The opportunity for students to use their talents to help others is an essential learning outcome.”
