Newburgh swimmers beaten in opener

The Newburgh Free Academy girls’ swim team’s season got off to a slow start last Wednesday as the Goldbacks lost their season-opening meet, 102-72, to the New Paltz Huguenots in their home pool.

Ella Gerbes won two events for the Goldbacks. She won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.87 and the 100-yard freestyle in 56.97. Seventh-grader Arabella Tantono was the only competitor in the 1-meter diving event, finishing with a six-dive score of 140.60.

The Goldbacks’ 400-meter relay team of Jordyn Bryant, Vivian Piscitella, AnnMarie Martin and Gerbes picked up a victory with a time of 4:06.61. The Huguenots only swam exhibition in that event.

The Goldbacks outscored New Paltz in both the diving and the 100-yard freestyle. Despite Gerbes’ win the 50-yard freestyle, the Huguenots took second, third and fourth in the event to outscore the Goldbacks, 9-7.

Brooke Vos (100-yard butterfly, 200-yard individual medley) won two events for the Huguenots. Becca Lucchesi (200-yard freestyle), Maya Pizzarello (500-yard freestyle), Charlee Domitrovits (100-yard backstroke) and Alaura Sheeley (100-yard breaststroke) all picked up wins for Newburgh.

New Paltz also won the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
