Newburgh’s Bucci survives a long day at the court

Newburgh’s Vivienne Bucci had a very long day of tennis.

She arrived at MatchPoint Tennis Center in Goshen before 9 a.m. and didn’t leave until after 5 p.m.

In between there was six hours of tennis, winning a 3-hour semifinal and a championship match of about equal length and Bucci finished second at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament on Thursday.

Bucci had a two-hour break after she outlasted Washingtonville’s Ally Davis – the tournament’s No. 2 seed 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 – in the semifinals.

That set up Bucci – the tournament’s No.3 seed – with a meeting with top-seeded Sasha Henesy of Middletown, who spent hours idle after she dispatched Pine Bush’s Tiffany Manikoth-Sooksavath, 6-0, 6-2.
Nothing about the championship match was easy for either competitor. Bucci led the first set early, but Henesy came back to win the first set, 7-5.

Henesy looked like she was ready to put Bucci away in the second set, first building a 4-1 lead, and then a 5-2 lead. But Bucci came fighting back to tie the set at 6-6 forcing the set to go to tiebreaker.

Bucci won the tiebreaker, 8-6, to force the decisive third set.

Henesy took an early lead and held off Bucci’s comeback attempt to win the third set, 6-3.

Bucci opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Warwick’s Piper Stewen in the second round. She advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over James I. O’Neill’s Vivian Contant, the tournament’s No. 6 seed.

All competitors who reached the quarterfinals will compete at this week’s Section 9 tournament, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at MatchPoint Tennis.

Bucci, the third seed out of the OCIAA will open the tournament in the Round of 16 against Highland’s Lena Tran.

Newburgh’s doubles team of Cora Kerin and Zara Tranquada, who entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed qualified for the Section 9 tournament by reaching the quarterfinals on Oct. 15.

Kerin and Tranquada opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cornwall’s Maeve Fogarty and Deven Hernandez in the first round and beat Beacon’s Bethany Rudolph and Allison Miller in the second round, 6-2, 7-5.

They were eliminated in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1, by the top-seed of the tournament, Leah Scalo and Keri Leahey of Warwick.

They will face the Mid Hudson Athletic League runners-up, Emma LaPolla and Gwen Benninger of Marlboro.
The Goldbacks’ Lambrini Andrianis and Angie Ludena were eliminated in the first round by Washingtonville’s Karoline Rosa and Sophie Rivera, 6-4.

Middletown’s Alxis Michael and Sandra Habwe, the fifth seed, won the championship with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-0 win over Washingtonville’s Maddy Kantor and Addison Davis.
