Penelope Vassell

Penelope Vassell, a longtime resident of the area, died on Tuesday, May 21. She was 92.

The daughter of the late William and Mary Vassell, she was born in Newburgh on January 10, 1932. Penny worked for many years in the legal field before her tenure as a clerk at Newburgh City Court, from where she retired. She was a faithful member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church where you could hear her singing in the choir every Sunday. Penny was known as a kind and caring person, and loved by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her sisters Angelina Patsalos, Anita “Jenny” Contis, and brother, Constantine “Gus” Vassell. She is survived by her devoted nieces, Ann, Jeanne and Kristina Patsalos, as well as other beloved nieces and nephews. Penny also adored her great nieces and nephews.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. A funeral service was held at 11 am on Friday, May 24 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Newburgh, with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor immediately following. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Kaplan Family Residence Hospice.
