Ring out for climate Oct. 30

Posted

As delegates from the world’s nations gather in Glasgow for COP26 Climate Conference convening on Nov. 1, it’s vital that we all urge our national, state, and local officials to take actions to minimize carbon emissions, support sustainable community-controlled green energy including local ecological agriculture that nourishes the Earth; and in our area, to  shut down Cricket Valley and CPV frack fuel plants, and to prohibit Danskammer power plant from using anything other than ecologically safe green energy. It would also be nice to get charging stations going everywhere in our state and nation for electric vehicles, and, as the coastal land and water of southern California are now being ravaged by an oil spill, it’s time to make the fossil fuel and nuclear fission industries pay the full cost of every devastation they create.

As voting begins on Oct. 23, we voters should vote Yes on Ballot Proposition 2, “to protect public health and the environment by adding the right of each person to clean air and water and a healthful environment to the Bill of Rights in Article I of the New York Constitution.”

There is a global Ring Out for Climate (with a FB page) on Oct. 30. Locally, participating houses of worship in Ulster and Orange counties, and the campus of SUNY New Paltz, will ring bells for 10 minutes that day starting at 1 p.m. (rain date, Oct. 31). In New Paltz, folks will gather at the corner of Main and Front Streets in starting at 12:15 that day. Live music will be provided by Tin Horn Rebellion, and bring your drum or pots and pans to join in this local Ring Out, organized by New Paltz Climate Action Coalition, Hudson Valley Green Party, and Interfaith Earth Council.
