After only a few months on the job, Sam Sutton is no longer the City of Newburgh’s Recreation Director.

City Manager Todd Venning confirmed Tuesday that the city has begun to search for a replacement for Sutton, who was appointed to the position this past June. He did not elaborate.

The job was posted on the city’s website on Friday, noting a starting salary of $86,837 plus benefits. According to the description, the work involves “responsibility for planning, coordinating, directing and supervising recreational programs using City owned recreational facilities or recreation activities sponsored by the City. The Director is responsible for organizing and directing any and all volunteer recreation leaders and temporary employees working in specific recreation activities and events in the City. Work is performed in accordance with general policies, principles and objectives outlined by the City Manager with leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out the details of the work. General supervision is exercised over recreation employees. Does related work as required.”

Applications are due Nov. 19.

Sutton, a Newburgh native, had left the area when he was 14 but was anxious to come back when the opportunity came.

“Since I left at 14, it’s always been get back home,” Sutton said in June. “Getting back to Newburgh was always my goal.”

Sutton could not be reached for comment this week.
