Town honors Mike Farbent on his retirement

Hello New Windsor. I want to personally congratulate New Windsor Deputy Police Chief Mike Farbent on his recent retirement.

I have had the pleasure to get to know Mike really well these last 17 years that I have been Recreation Director for the Town of New Windsor. We have worked together on may events including New Windsor Community Day and I have seen first-hand his dedication to the community as a top-notch police officer and a fine leader of the department.

Mike is a stand-up guy who worked his way up the ranks over the years with a tremendous work ethic and desire to learn. He was a true team player, and always did the job with the highest amount of integrity. Mike his well respected by his peers and the officers under his command as Deputy Chief. Mike has a wonderful family who are all always so supportive of what we do in New Windsor as well coming to and helping out at our events and programs.

Congratulations Mike on your retirement and may God Bless you and your family!

I was saddened to hear that Tony Mattaroccia recently passed away. Tony was a volunteer tax preparer for AARP for many years and I got to know him when we were a tax site in New Windsor. He did a great job doing the taxes for our seniors over the years. May Tony rest in peace, and my heart and prayers go out to Tony’s wife Joan and their entire family.

Congratulations to New Windsor’s very own Mike Lutz who is being nominated into the New York State Veteran’s Hall of Fame.

Mike had 35 years of military service among three branches of service including the United States Navy, the Army National Guard, and the 105th Air National Guard. Michael served in Vietnam with the Mobile Riverine Force. Mike’s military honors include the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, the RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Mike is a true American Hero.

I have gotten to know Mike pretty well over the years as he would always work at our summer concerts helping Parties Alacart by handing out free popcorn and sno kones. I knew he has served in our military but I had no idea he had such an amazing career in the military. Mike is a member of VFW Post 1161, and the Catholic War Veterans. His service is never ending.

Mike is most proud of his seven children and 10 grandchildren. Congratulations Mike you are so deserving of this honor!

The Town of New Windsor Memorial Day Parade will be on Sunday May 22 to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Town will hold a ceremony at the Veterans Monument on the corner of Route 94 and 9W at 11 a.m. The parade will kick off from the New Windsor Post Office plaza, marching down Route 94 (Blooming Grove Turnpike) and ending at New Windsor School.

The Town is inviting local groups to participate in the parade via marching or entering a float.

Any group interested in participating in the parade please email mveronesi@newwindsor-ny.gov.

On Saturday May 14 the Recreation Department will be taking a day trip to Peddler’s Village in Lahaska Pennsylvania for the annual Strawberry Festival. At the festival craftspeople gather to show their wares and demonstrate their skills, and strawberries are served in various forms such as dipped in chocolate, in assorted pastries, shortcakes, in jams, fritters, as well as fresh and unadorned. Live entertainment and pie eating contests add to the festivities of this traditional spring celebration.

In the addition to the vendors that set-up the village has an additional 50+ upscale and unique shops and eight restaurants. The bus leaves New Windsor Town Hall Complex at 8 a.m. and returns at 7 p.m. The trip is open to all ages and is $35 per person.

Birthday shout outs this week go to Susan Esposito whose birthday is on May 12, to my mother-in-law Joann Lawrence and Anthony Loia whose birthdays are on May 13, to Eric Grizbowski whose birthday is on May 14th, to John Bellantone whose birthday is on May 16, and to anyone else out there celebrating birthdays this week Happy Birthday!

If anyone has a birthday or other special event you want mentioned in my column, or have anything going on in New Windsor that you want the world to know about you can reach me at mveronesi@optimum.net or by calling 845-629-1260.
Have a great week.
