The Town of Newburgh was named one of the safest small communities in America, coming in at 146th in the nation according to personal finance website MoneyGeek.

“This indicates the Town of Newburgh is in the top 20 percent of the safest communities in America of almost 1,000 small communities (having 30,000 to 100,000 residents),” said Town of Newburgh Supervisor Gil Piaquadio.

MoneyGeek used research from the National Institutes of Health to look at the costs of crimes by type. MoneyGeek included data on violent crimes such as murder, rape and aggravated assault and on property crimes like burglaries and car theft.

“Though property crimes are much more common, violent crimes are more costly,” read the MoneyGeek website in calculating the cost of crime.

It applied the analysis to almost 1,000 small communities across the country to see which were the safest. They identified small as being anywhere between 30,000 and 100,000 residents. Newburgh has a population of 31,128 residents.

They found that the cost of crime in Newburgh is $214 per capita. The median cost of crime per capita for small cities is $500. It found that the violent crime rate in the Town of Newburgh was 70.7 and the property crime rate was 2,926.6. The cost of crime came in at $6,659.

“I feel the town’s low crime record is because of our well trained police officers who are efficient, courteous and always accountable for their actions and residents who report problems when they see them,” said Piaquadio.

The safest small town in the nation they identified was in Franklin, Massachusetts, with a crime cost per capita at just $12. The safest town in New York was the Town of Carmel at $40 per capita.

“The town will stay vigilant to keep crime down through its police department and ask residents if you see something illegal or suspicious report it,” said Piaquadio on how the town plans to move forward and hold this placement.
