We continue our long association with Moxart and this season will perform three wonderful works including Copland's Clarinet Concerto. Originally commissioned by the Jazz giant, Benny Goodman, 'the King of Swing', it opens sumptuously and languidly before giving way to the composer's characteristic New York jazzy inflections. This piece will be paired with Beethoven on one side and Tchaikovsky on the other, providing an altogether delectable program. It is a seamless blend of orchestra with electronic and digital sounds and beats and it is riveting. The program opens with Smetana’s beloved Vltava, named for the mighty river that courses through the Czech Republic, while the second half will include some of the most irresistible orchestral selections from Wagner's Ring Cycle, beginning with the hero Siegfried's Rhine River Journey.

Baron Carpelan wrote to Sibelius in 1901 and said, "Mr. Sibelius, it is high time for you to travel. You will spend the late autumn and the winter in Italy… You remember what Italy meant for Tchaikovsky’s development and for Richard Strauss." And indeed, Italy is where the first sketches of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 appear. Along with this delightful work, we will perform Tchaikovsky’s Cappriccio Italien, which the composer based on folk-tunes he heard wandering the streets of Rome. And circling back to the other composer in the baron’s letter, we begin the program with Richard Strauss’ impishly playful Till Eulenspeigel’s Merry Pranks. It tells the puckish story of a medieval trickster and mischief-maker who gets his deserved comeuppance in the end.

This piece is a reckoning with life’s fundamental meaning and the ultimate destination of the soul. The finale is one of the most awe-inspiring musical experiences you can ever have. A vast choir of angels beckons us to heaven, performed here in collaboration with the combined choruses of West Point and Vassar College, amassing a total of some 250 musicians and singers on the stage. Lastly, the theme of Resurrection itself is so germane and applicable to our own GNSO story here in Newburgh. In fact, it is the overarching theme of this entire anniversary season. We at GNSO like to think of the orchestra as a symbol of Newburgh’s renaissance, an emblem of Newburgh Rising. The arts are always a harbinger of renewal and growth, and we want the symphony to be seen leading the charge in this.
