Getting ready to celebrate 120 years

Now that the Town of Highlands Independence Day ‘Do Over’ has taken place, it’s time to gear up for the next big community event.

It’s the 120th birthday celebration for the Village of Highland Falls and will take place the weekend of October 2-4.

“Join us as Highland Falls celebrates its 120th anniversary with a community-wide celebration showcasing the history, heritage and spirit that have shaped our village for generations,” committee members said. “As we honor the people, stories and milestones that built our community, we also look ahead with pride and optimism toward the future, creating new memories and traditions for generations to come.

There will be a parade on Saturday; they’re working on a family-friendly carnival, and there will be historical exhibits.

A three-day concert series featuring “local legends and tribute bands” including Shan Scott (4-5:30 p.m. on Friday), River of Dreams Hudson Valley Billy Joel Tribute Band (6-8 p.m. Friday), Hurley Mountain Highway (2-5:30 p.m. Saturday) and Whiskey Crossing (6-8 p.m. Saturday). Sunday’s music will be announced soon.

On Saturday there will be Blue Ribbon competitions showcasing local talents and traditions (bakers, chefs, artists, quilters, gardeners). There will be kids’ versions, as well. Registration is free – Town of Highlands residents only. While participants don’t have to preregister, they can on the website below.

Also on Saturday, expected are food trucks (including The Chill Wagon, Roll & Win, 2 Dogs Hot Dogs, Palmpanada Island, Smokin Grate BBQ, Light of the World Beverage Co., PBF Polish, Brazilian Fusion, Mom & Pop’s Rollin Stove and Cousins Maine Lobster) and fireworks.

Highland Falls Mayor Jim DiSalvo praised the committee members this week, and urged residents – and visitors to the community – to plan to attend. On the committee are Tierney Scott, Jeannette Scott, Tiana Grehanov, the Village Hall staff with the help of Trustee Jen Gargiulo.

“They’re working hard to not only create a fun weekend but also celebrate this community and its history,” the mayor said. “The focus is the residents. Things have changed since 1906, but we’re all still really one big family.”

T-shirts ($20) and sweatshirts ($25) are now on sale. To order, visit the website (below) or stop by Village Hall with cash or checks (payable to Village of Highland Falls). There is also a QR code link that can be obtained on the Village of Highland Falls Facebook page.

The Village of Highland Falls, New York, was established in 1906 in two formal steps. The first took place in a vote for incorporation, held on Saturday, October 13, 1906. The second was an election of village officers in November of that same year. Highland Falls was originally called Buttermilk Falls.
