The Highland Falls Special Events Committee will host the community’s 31st annual Martin Luther King Day March on Monday, Jan. 20, on Main St. in Highland Falls.
Line up for the event begins at 10:45 a.m. in front of Sacred Heart Church on Main St. There will be a short prayer service there, before the march sets off at 11 a.m. heading about a quarter of a mile to Memorial Park. All are invited to join.
Town of Highlands Councilman Tyrone King hosts the annual event; he took over from Barbara Joyce Clayborne several years ago. It was Mrs. Clayborne and her late husband, Rev. Jesse Clayborne, who founded it in Highland Falls,
“We encourage all community members to come together and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through this meaningful march,” King said at the January 13 meeting of the Town Board. “This event is an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King's contributions to civil rights and promote unity and strength within our community.”
Once the march arrives at Memorial Park there will be a brief ceremony at that location. Guest speaker there will be West Point Chaplain Joseph McCall.
