Concerts commemorates ‘War and Healing’

Join the renowned American String Quartet and poet Tom Sleigh Sunday Nov. 14 for “War and Healing,” a program of music and verse dedicated to victims of international conflict. The inspiring collaboration acknowledges times of hardship while recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans.

The concert, sponsored by Newburgh Chamber Music, begins at 3 p.m. at St. George’s Church, 105 Grand St., in Newburgh. It will be the quartet’s 11th appearance for Newburgh Chamber Music, and the second since NCM resumed live performances last month after an 18-month shutdown because of the pandemic.

Sleigh is the acclaimed author of more than ten books of poetry and the winner of numerous prizes from literary societies. His newest book, “The King’s Touch,” which highlights themes of war and healing, was recently published by Graywolf Press. During the last decade, he has worked as a journalist in Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Kenya, Iraq, and Libya. In 2018 a book of his essays on refugees in the Middle East and Africa, “The Land Between Two Rivers: Writing In An Age Of Refugees,” was published simultaneously by Graywolf Press as a companion piece to a collection of his poems, “House of Fact, House of Ruin.”

The quartet consists of violinists Peter Winograd and Laurie Carney, violist Daniel Avshalomov, and cellist Wolfram Koessel. It was formed 47 years ago when its original members were students at The Juilliard School. The ensemble’s presentations of the complete quartets of Beethoven, Mozart, and other composers have won widespread acclaim. It has performed in all 50 states and around the world, on radio and television. Its extensive discography includes numerous labels.

Tickets are available at the door or online. Adults: $25. Students: $5. Admission is free for Newburgh students with ID. Vaccinations (except for medical exemptions) and masks are required. St. George’s is handicapped-accessible, with parking across the street. For more information, or to purchase tickets in advance, visit newburghchambermusic.org.

Audience members are invited to bring instruments that they wish to donate to Valentina’s Instrument Donation Bank, to be repaired, if necessary, and given to Greater Newburgh Schools and music students.
