Highland students benefit from Rotary Club book project

Members of the Highland Rotary Club are once again making good on their commitment to community service, this time by donating brand new books to every Highland Central School District student in Grades 3 and 6.

A group of Rotarians visited Highland Elementary School earlier this month to deliver copies of the book The Littles Take a Trip by John Peterson. Later, another group stopped by Highland Middle School (HMS) to drop off Restart by Gordon Korman. Each book title was chosen by teachers in Grades 3 and 6 as ones that would fit well into this year’s curriculum.

According Steve Laubach, the Rotary’s membership chairman and former president, the Club’s annual Book Project has been going on for many years. “In the past we used to donate dictionaries to the students, but we decided to start doing something that would really encourage reading,” Laubach explained.

Jennifer Curless, a Social Studies teacher and Grade 6 coordinator at HMS, was happy to share the main reason why she and her colleagues chose their book, which is about a young boy who gets the chance to change his life after falling and losing his memory.

“Many of us are in need of a ‘restart’ these days,” Curless said. “We are extremely appreciative to the Highland Rotary for its generosity. We can’t wait to read with our students!”
