Legislators urge gas tax relief

A Resolution amending the formula for sales and compensating use tax on motor fuel and diesel motor fuel has been sponsored by Lagislators Keving Roberts and Minority Leader Kenneth J. Ronk, Jr. Legislators Cahill, Corcoran, Fabiano, Hansut, Litts and Lopez have joined them in co-sponsoring the measure which elects a cents per gallon tax rate in lieu of the current percentage rate. This change could net Ulster County taxpayers millions in savings.

Legislator Kevin Roberts (District 12, Town of Plattekill), Deputy Chair of the Laws, Rules, & Government Services Committee said, “It’s not enough to give Ulster County’s families, essential workers, and small business owners our heartfelt gratitude, we need to provide real relief to residents.” He continued “Rising rents and climbing costs at the grocery store are making it harder and harder for people to make ends meet. Softening the blow at the gas pumps will provide that real relief right now.”

Minority Leader Kenneth J. Ronk, Jr. (District 13, Town of Shawangunk), Deputy Chair of the Ways & Means Committee, and Deputy Chair of the Audit Committee added “As County Legislators we are responsible, first and foremost, to county taxpayers. It is our obligation as appropriators to do the work and make the hard decisions to provide residents with budgets that provide the services people depend on at the most equitable and fair cost.” He added “My caucus believes that the best place for Ulster County taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars is in their own wallets.”

The resolution was scheduled to be considered by the Legislature’s Ways & Means Committee on April 12.

If adopted by the full Legislature the measure would take effect on June 1, 2022.
