The Marlboro High School Drama Club is presenting the musical, “The Little Mermaid” this weekend, with performances on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m., Saturday March 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. at the High School auditorium, 50 Cross Rd., Marlboro. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for students and will be available at the door.
Director Zachary Povall said students began rehearsing in early January, five days a week for about 10 weeks.
“It’s been a pretty spectacular journey. The students have put in a lot of work and the show is huge; it has a lot of dancing, a lot of singing and a lot of set pieces, so it’s been a really big production with all hands on deck to get it done,” he said.
Povall is the 4th and 5th Grade Band Director, teaches 3rd Grade General Music and is the High School Drama Club Director and Pit Conductor.
Eric Braunstein is the Assistant Director and Mike Werba is handling the Technical Direction.
The original story was written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837 as part of a collection of fairy tales. It is about a young mermaid princess who is willing to give up her life in the sea in order to gain a human soul. The tale has been turned into a musical, anime, ballet, opera and film. The Little Mermaid, was created by lyricist Howard Ashman with music by Alan Menken and book by Doug Wright.
