Marlboro recognizes special elementary student

At a recent Marlboro School Board meeting Marlboro Elementary School Principal Patricia Walsh took a few moments to recognize 5th grade student Zachary Dina.

“Zachary is a very special young man who approached me over the summer and wanted to do something to thank me, the teachers and the staff for all of the help we provided last year for him and everyone else,” she said.

Walsh said Zachary raised money himself to pay for 150 orange roses and ordered black paper and wrapped them up with black ribbon and distributed them at the open house.

“He delivered them individually to every single person in this building; custodians, teachers, administration, student teachers; everybody got one,” Walsh said.

Walsh said since then, Zachary decided to forgo presents for his 10th birthday on November 13 and instead requested donations to his fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project that supports injured Veterans. He raised $600, “and Wounded Warrior heard about this and reached out and they are now going to write a story about Zachary’s endeavor and post that on their website.”

This year, through a family connection, Zachery sent care packages to Veterans who are patients at a military hospital in Florida.

American Legion Commander Tom Schroeder invited Zachary to speak at the town’s Veterans Day Ceremony at the Middle School.

Principal Walsh said, “We are so proud of you Zachary, we are gifted to have you with us and as Superintendent Brooks would say, that is an example of a Duke.”
