On July 31, at approximately 2:25 a.m., troopers observed a 2013 Audi S4 traveling on Southside Avenue in the Town of New Paltz in violation of several vehicle and traffic laws. Troopers stopped the vehicle and identified the operator as Edwin Mendez, 29 from New Paltz. While being interviewed troopers determined that Mendez was unlicensed and was impaired by alcohol and he was subsequently arrested. He refused to take a chemical test and was charged with Felony Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operator.

Later, that same day, at approximately 4:15 a.m. State Police were patrolling on State Route 299 and observed the same vehicle in violation of several vehicle and traffic laws. Troopers stopped the vehicle and recognized the operator from his arrest approximately two hours earlier. He was arrested and charged with Felony DWI and Aggravated Unlicensed Operator first degree.

He was issued two appearance tickets for the Town of New Paltz Court on August 17 at 6 p.m.
