‘Teas, talks and workshops’ continue through June

The Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library has extended its “Tea, Talks and Workshops” series through June. The sessions are hosted by the library on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Adults interested in stand-alone, afternoon events that offer information and inspiration will want to register by calling 845-795-2200. Here is what is coming up in May and June in the library’s Community Room:

May 13, Floral Container Gardens -- Create a beautiful planter with provided flowers and soil. Bring your own container (12-inch diameter opening or flower box) or use one of the library’s basic planters on-hand. With Instructor Vivian Lanzarone, proprietor of Seeds Garden Boutique.

May 27, Understanding Alzheimer’s, and Dementia — Learn about the signs and diagnosis of memory loss during this introductory talk. With Presenter, Joan Carl, Alzheimer’s Association, Hudson Valley Chapter.

June 10, Chair Yoga -- Sample a class in relaxing chair yoga. With Instructor Gina DuBois, Hidden Haven Yoga.

June 24, Propagating Succulent Plants -- Discover easy methods of augmenting your succulent garden. With Instructor Stephanie Barley, craftsperson, and gardener.

The Knights of Columbus Fr. Hanley Council 7266 and Msgr. Simmons Assembly 1837 meets every Third Thursday of the month in the Parish Hall at 7 p.m. We look forward to seeing our brother Knights!!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Marlboro Middle School’s 18th annual Diversity Night on April 26. Guests sampled delicious food from around the world while learning about the diverse cultures represented in our community. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Madeline’s Dance Studio and the Marlboro Jazz Band. A wonderful time was had by all!

The Marlboro Central School District is pleased to share that Marlboro Middle School will soon be designated as an Essential Elements: School to Watch. This New York State program recognizes schools that demonstrate continuous improvement and excel in four domains: academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure.

To read more about the school to Watch designation, which will go into effect starting in the 2022-2023 school year.

The Marlboro Central School District Music Department is proud to have been honored with a “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Marlboro was one of 738 school districts nationwide to receive this prestigious designation, which is awarded to schools that demonstrate special achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Bravo!

Weekly Recipe
Orecchiette With Broccoli Rabe

INGREDIENTS Kosher salt
12 oz. orecchiette

1 lb. broccoli rabe, trimmed and cut into 2” pieces
2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
2 andouille sausage links (about 6 oz.), sliced into coins
3 tbsp. butter, divided 3 cloves garlic, minced
Freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 c. freshly grated Parmesan Zest and juice of 1 lemon Pinch crushed red pepper flakes
DIRECTIONS In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente according to package directions. During the last 2 minutes, add broccoli rabe and cook 1 minute. Reserve 1 cup pasta water, then drain pasta and broccoli rabe together. 

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add sausage and cook, stirring occasionally, until warmed through and slightly golden, about 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon butter, garlic, and season generously with pepper. Cook until fragrant, 1 minute. 2 Add ½ cup reserved pasta water and bring to a simmer. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter, broccoli rabe, and pasta and toss to combine. 3 Add Parmesan, lemon zest and juice, and red pepper flakes. Toss constantly to melt cheese, removing skillet from heat when about half the cheese has melted. If sauce is still too thick, loosen with more pasta water. Season with salt before serving.
