The Thanksgiving season is upon us

Posted

The holiday season is upon us and with Thanksgiving quickly approaching, I have been thinking about what this holiday is about. One of the earliest “Thanksgiving” celebrations was held in 1621 in Plymouth, MA. While not called Thanksgiving, it was a celebration of thankfulness for the first successful harvest since surviving the voyage to America. Throughout American history, Thanksgiving has been recognized for many reasons, depending on the climate of the day.

So, what does that have to do with me? Why do I celebrate? Over the years Thanksgiving has been a family tradition of turkey, pies, and family. How could I not be grateful for mom’s amazing apple pie?! But as I get older, I think about it as more than just a tradition with great pie.

While I try to recognize my blessings daily, like many people, I get caught up in life and am not as mindful as I would wish. But Thanksgiving is a powerful reminder that I am blessed.

I have a loving husband, an active and dynamic 91-year-old mother, and caring siblings and their families. I have wonderful friends and I am part of a connected and supportive community. But there is so much more. I have a safe comfortable home, plenty of food, and my needs are met. For all this, I am grateful.

Thanksgiving is not only a reminder of my blessings, but a reminder of those who are not as blessed. Those who battle physical or mental illness. Families who struggle to provide warm shelter and food for their children. People who lack safety and security.

For me, Thanksgiving has become a day of reflection. I reflect not only on my own blessings, but on those who I wish to feel the same.

At this holiday season, I wish you many blessings.
