Vote for your favorite election sticker

For the second year, the Ulster County Board of Elections is inviting the community to vote on their favorite “I Voted” sticker that will be distributed to each polling location for the Ulster County General Election on November 8, 2022.

As of Tuesday, the leading sticker, drawn by Hudson Rowan, 14 of Marbletown has more than 167,000 votes and received 93 percent of the votes after going viral. The response attracted the attention of both the New York Times and Washington Post.

It was described in the Times as “an electric concoction of colors: a pink and purple and turquoise creature with a wild bloodshot stare, a toothy neon grin and spiderlike legs. To the right, scrawled in red letters: I VOTED.”

“It took me, like, 10 minutes to draw it,” Hudson told The Washington Post. “It was a quick … little sketch, and then I submitted it. And a couple days later, my mom was like, ‘Hudson, your thing has like a couple thousand votes.’ And I was just freaking out, ‘cause I didn’t know how that happened and how so many people voted.”

Any of the six stickers to receive over 1,500 votes by Friday July 29 at 5 p.m. (with the exception of the winner) will have their sticker printed for the special August 23 election to decide a replacement for Antonio Delgado who resigned his seat in Congress to become Lt. Governor of New York.

(The winning design will be saved for the Nov. 8 election.)

“It has been so much fun seeing people react all over the county and even the world to our contest! We started this program to bring young people into the election process in a fun way and we have certainly accomplished our goal this year,” said Commissioner Ashley Dittus It is our hope that people in Ulster County and all over the country are inspired to vote not just in an online contest but at the polls where it matters the most.”

Commissioner John Quigley adds, “This sticker contest has given us an opportunity to express the importance of running free and fair elections. One crucial part of our elections that get overlooked is our election inspectors. As we gear up for an election, it can take upwards of 700 part timers to work that day. Anyone interested in working as an election inspector might just be the lucky person to hand out these awesome stickers this year!”
