Walden Playboys plan to resume racing

The Plattekill Town Board met this past Wednesday to review the new police reform plan and a hopeful Walden Playboy Motorcycle Club season. Luckily, the town’s summer camp has also taken a step in the right direction.

At their last meeting, The Police Reform & Re-Invention Committee Chair Kelly Nelson proposed training classes and increased transparency between the police department and the constituents of Plattekill.

Now, Town Supervisor Joseph Croce announced that the town has performed a comprehensive review of current police force deployment strategies, policies, procedures and practices, and has created a plan to improve those facets of the department.

Croce said that the town has consulted with stakeholders such as the local police force, members of the community who are especially affected by high numbers of police and community interactions, faith-based community groups, the district attorney’s local office, the local public defender and the local elected officials. This plan is in pursuant with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s June 2, 2020 executive order, 203, titled “New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative.” Plattekill officially adopted the new plan.

The Walden Playboy Motorcycle Club wrote a letter to Supervisor Croce for the approval of tentative 2021 motocross race dates. In the letter, the club’s president requested race dates of April 17 and 18, May 1 and 2, Aug. 28 and 29, and Oct. 23 and 24. Specifically, the October race dates would be for their Halloween classic. In addition to their proposed dates, another motocross club has requested use of the track for July 10 and 11.

“With the disastrous 2020 in the rearview mirror, [we’re] looking forward to a much brighter 2021,” the letter said. “We struggled to make it through but we did and we are happy to put 2020 behind us.”

Croce explained that there was a time where there were a lot of problems with motocross tracks, but Walden’s motocross track has continued to remain open and he was unsure of any complaints from code enforcement officers.

“We don’t know where everything’s going, but one caveat would be that they observe any rules and regulations that the state has in place as much as possible about social distancing and the wearing of masks, all of the rules and regulations we’ve all become so familiar with,” Croce said.

The Board approved the motion for the proposed dates.

Luckily, New York state approved summer camps, but in order to host the Plattekill Summer Camp, the Plattekill Elementary School must provide approval.

“That’s the next hurdle [because] they have to approve use on rainy days as an alternate location,” Croce said. “So we’re moving forward slowly with summer camp and hoping that there’s not going to be any glitches and we’ll be able to hold it.”

Residents of Plattekill can mark their calendars for the Memorial Day parade which will be held on May 29 at 12 p.m in Veterans Memorial Park. There will be a short memorial to pay tribute to those who have served in the armed forces, refreshments will be served and there will be an invocation from a minister at the ceremony.

The Town Board meets again on April 21 at 7 p.m. at the Plattekill Town Hall.
