Wallkill honors longtime school board members

As the Wallkill Central School District closed out 2024, its Board of Education took time to honor its longest-serving members.

At the board’s Oct. 16 meeting, Superintendent Kevin Castle presented certificates of recognition to the members, highlighting their years of dedicated service. Some have served nearly two decades or more. Kathryn Anderson has been a member for 22 years, while Donna Crowley has served for 16 years. Vice President Thomas Frisbie has served 19 years, including nine as vice president, and President Joseph LoCicero has served 15 years, with 14 as president.

Castle, who has worked in the district for 24 years, described Wallkill as a family. He credited the board members for their long-term commitment, which he said ensures that students have ample opportunities while maintaining fiscal responsibility to taxpayers.

“I’ve asked them what keeps them on the board for so long,” Castle said. “It’s the enjoyment of what they do, seeing us follow through on a vision—whether it’s an academic, fiscal, or capital plan—and the tangible returns on their investment of time and effort.”

Recognizing individual contributions

Castle praised Anderson as an active listener and a strong advocate for the arts, particularly music. As chair of the curriculum committee, she provides updates on programming and commands attention whenever she speaks.

LoCicero, a Wallkill graduate, was lauded for his community ties and leadership during the hiring of 543 employees. Castle credited his ability to ask insightful questions and help select the best candidates.

Frisbie, a professional engineer, was recognized for his contributions to the district’s facilities, including his oversight of athletic field projects and capital improvement plans. His attention to detail has helped keep projects under budget.

Crowley’s expertise in accounting has been invaluable on the audit committee. Castle said her ability to ask critical questions and review draft audits has strengthened the district’s financial stability.

“I want to thank them for always challenging me, making me think, and just being good people,” Castle said. “The district is fortunate to have such dedicated board members who embody the spirit of volunteerism.”

Reflections from Board Members
Anderson, the district’s longest-serving board member, reflected on the orchestra program she helped create, calling it one of her proudest accomplishments. “I’m so happy the people of Wallkill trusted me to be on this board. It’s been rewarding in every way possible,” she said.

Crowley expressed gratitude for the camaraderie among board members and their shared mission of serving the community. She highlighted the upgrades to athletic fields as a significant achievement. “Everybody brings different abilities and passions, but we all care about the kids,” she said.

LoCicero emphasized his connection to the district as a former student and current leader. He takes pride in the district’s capital projects and the expansion of high school programs. “I love this district. We have an amazing staff, board, and focus, which shows in what we’ve accomplished,” he said.

Frisbie, who joined the board in 2005, said his engineering background inspired him to contribute to his community. “I’ve really enjoyed my 19 years on the board,” he said. “We have a great team, and it’s been rewarding to see the impact of our work.”
