Arrest made in Broadway racial incident

A road rage incident that escalated into a potential hate crime has resulted in the arrest of a Town of Newburgh man.

RD McLymore, pastor of Newburgh’s Life Restoration Church  posted on his Instagram page an exchange on Broadway with another driver that took place after McLymore let another car in front of him. In the video, the other driver is heard using the N-word at the pastor, telling him that he was an off-duty state trooper and saying “you’ll never be white.”

McLymore said the man also threatened him with a knife.

Late Tuesday, City of Newburgh Police reported the arrest of William J. Ryan, a 60-year-old Town of Newburgh resident. Ryan was charged with Menacing Second Degree as a Hate Crime, a Class E Felony.

Ryan is being held in police custody until his arraignment this evening at the Goshen Central Arraignment Center.

“There is no place for hate in our community. Mr. Ryan will be held accountable for his criminal actions and deplorable speech.,” Newburgh Police Chief Anthony Geraci  said His racists threats were not only harmful to the victim in this case, but echoes deep within our City.”
