Newburgh City Council approved the resolution for the construction of two community splash pads at Xavier Lunan and Tyrone Crabb Parks.

Newburgh City Engineer, Jason Morris, stated before the city council during the city work session that the proposed project was in the amount of $309,333.33.

These funds would be for the construction of two splash pads in the two city parks and the construction would be handled by JMS Outdoor Solutions, LLC.

During the question period, Morris addressed Mayor Torrance Harvey’s question on the timeline for the project. Morris addressed the council and stated that contract documents anticipate completion by July 1 of this year.

The pool and aquatic center have not been available to the general public for the past several years due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic and is in need of repairs and maintenance. The pool will not be open again this summer to the general public.

City Manager Todd Venning provided an update to Councilman Robert Sklarz, who asked about a third splash pad potentially being constructed at Delano-Hitch Park.

Venning said the costs for the two splash pads were previously approved and his office is still waiting on the estimates for the construction of the aquatic center and pool. His office will keep Sklarz and the council updated on any developments about the pool and other projects.

An alternative solution to offer City of Newburgh residents aquatic based activities was brought forward by Harvey. He suggested reaching out to the Newburgh Enlarged City School District for possible public use of the pool at Newburgh Free Academy. The pool, utilized by the Newburgh Free Academy swimming and diving teams, was recently refurbished.

Another activities alternative that Harvey suggested for the executive staff to look at was the potential return of traveling summer camps with water slides and other activities for the city residents and children to enjoy.
