City’s occupancy tax goes into effect April 1

The City of Newburgh is reminding businesses and travelers that beginning April 1, 2023 overnight stays in the City of Newburgh at hotels, motels, inns, BnBs, vacation rentals, short term rentals, and rooms or properties secured through online hosting companies and room remarketers are subject to a 5% City hotel room occupancy tax.

Every individual, business, hosting company, and room remarketer renting out property or rooms for short-term stays in the City of Newburgh is now required to register for a Certificate of Authority by filling out the Application for Certificate of Authority. Additionally, every registrant is required to collect the tax, or ensure the tax is collected, and submit quarterly returns to the City.

“The City of Newburgh is committed to growing our tourism and hospitality industries, and we are excited to welcome travelers into the City to experience our restaurants, galleries, parks, small businesses, and the best waterfront entertainment in the Hudson Valley.,” said City Manager Todd Venning in a prepared statement. “The City of Newburgh extends sincere gratitude to Governor Kathy Hochul, Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson, and Senator James Skoufis for their work to strengthen the City of Newburgh’s economy.”
