The Cornwall Central boys basketball team’s playoff run came to an end Thursday with a 69-59 loss to Our Lady of Lourdes in the NYSPHSAA Section 9 Class AA semifinals.
The Dragons (15-7) were unable to keep pace with Lourdes, which advanced to Saturday’s championship game and went on to defeat Washingtonville for the sectional title.
Cornwall reached the semifinals with a hard-fought 50-45 victory over Valley Central on Tuesday. The Dragons used a balanced scoring attack, led by Malik Sonko’s 16 points. Jack Demetriow added 12 points, while Jayden Wendt and Matt Cerone contributed nine and eight, respectively.
The win over Valley Central marked Cornwall’s third victory in four games and was part of a streak that saw the visiting team emerge victorious in three straight matchups. Valley Central ended its season on a three-game skid, finishing with a 13-8 record.
Cornwall closes its season with a 15-7 record, having put together a strong campaign that saw them contend for a sectional title before falling to Lourdes, the eventual champions.
