Council to discuss pool plans at work session

Plans for a proposed new City of Newburgh Aquatic Center are scheduled to be presented to the city council at its upcoming work session.

“We are moving on this item as fast as possible! I really like these designs,” Mayor Torrance Harvey wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. “We are hoping that they get approved and we can get shovels in the ground ASAP! We are being told it wouldn’t be completed until summer 2025. BUT the council is asking the Architects to complete it sooner!!!”

Engineering Firm Clark Patterson Lee had presented updated plans for the pool in September, City officials had originally hoped to build an Olympic-sized pool at the Delano-Hitch Recreation Center. The current plans show a pool comparable in size to the one at Newburgh Free Academy. The timetable presented by the engineer calls for work to commence in August of 2023 and continuing throughout 2024. The complex would be ready to open by Memorial Day Weekend of 2025.

The council work session is scheduled for Thursday, February 9, beginning at 6 p.m. on the third floor of City Hall, 83 Broadway. It is open to the public. It will be livestreamed via the City’s website, and Facebook pages, as well as recorded. The recording will be made available at a later date.
