Dukes seek to resume winning ways

The COVID-19-shortened 2021 season ended in disappointment for the Marlboro baseball team as the Iron Dukes saw their season end on Jack Kroh Field, with a loss to Chester in the Section 9 Class B championship game.

The Iron Dukes enter every season with one goal: create a winning atmosphere as they attempt to win as many titles as they can.

The Iron Dukes will attempt to march toward the championship this season, despite losing four seniors – shortstop Will Logue, pitcher/third baseman Derek Sherman, pitcher/outfielder Alex Grzechowski and outfielder Ryan Corcoran.

However, returning are Mike Valente, Collin Casey, Chris Thorne, and Harrison Conn.

“We want our guys to get better each day and for them to strive and be the best player and teammate that they can be,” Marlboro coach John Morrisey said.

New to the team this year will be Devin Conrad, Maxwell McKiever, Jack Schlager, and Owen Schlager.

Unlike last season, the 2022 campaign will be more “normal,” and that’s already begun.

The preseason started on schedule with a March 14 beginning for tryouts, and games have begun in early April as normal.

The Section 9 tournament will be held in late May as normal, and the champions will move on to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament.

“I want our players to be committed to the team and putting the needs of the team before their own,” Morrisey said. “I want our team to work toward the same goal, to create a winning atmosphere.”

The Highland Huskies did not respond to requests for information.
