Esther Schmitt Manz passed away peacefully, at her home, on January 21, 2022. She was born to Mary Fitzgerald Schmitt and Charles Schmitt on November 28, 1926. She graduated from high school in Montgomery, NY and went on to receive her Bachelors’ Degree in Health and Physical Education from SUNY Cortland and became a physical education teacher.

Esther married Aloysius Patrick Manz on June 21, 1953 and they were married for 50 years until Al’s passing in 2004. In addition to Al, Esther was predeceased by her sisters Ann Kaufman and Kathryn “Katty” Marcano, her brothers Charles “Billy” Schmitt and Albert Schmitt, and dear friend Mary Ann Gibson.

Esther is survived by her children, Kathryn and Marvin Stewart of Tallahassee, FL, Ellen and David Thayer of Bradenton, FL, Paul and Sheryl Manz of Monticello, NY and Patrick and Dinene Manz of Maybrook, NY. She was the beloved Nana to her grandchildren, Katie Alvarez (Julio), Amy Cosens (Lee), Benjamin Stewart (Allee Jo), Laura Wagner (Brian), Lisa Manz (Trey), Hannah Stewart, and Alexis Manz; and great-grandchildren, Stephen, Cole Gia, Savannah, Margaret, Oliver, Charlotte, and Tess. Esther is also survived by her wonderful sisters and best friends, Margaret Bartle and Mary Faulkner, as well as her many cherished nieces and nephews.

Esther was very fortunate to have incredible caregivers in Stephanie Kaufman and Dion Watson who not only attended to her needs but became part of her family. Additionally, Dr. Nasser and Dr. Bekele-Acuri, both of Crystal Run Healthcare, made certain that she had the very best medical care. The kindness, patience and expertise shown by all four of these individuals is appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Father Bob Porpora will officiate at a graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Montgomery at 10 a.m. on Friday, January, 28, 2022. A celebration of Esther’s life will be held at a later date.
