Fire recruits fail test but remain on city payroll

Two City of Newburgh firefighters plan to re-enter the firefighter academy in August but continue to receive their annual salary from the city.

According to a recent report, two recruits were hired in March by the city fire department and began their firefighter training that same month.

However, both men did not complete their required training. Proper training and certification are required in order to answer and address any fire calls or situations.

The recruits were identified as Rayquan Bryant and Adrian Adorno. Bryant was reported to be the grandson of City Councilman Omari Shakur, who did not respond to requests for comment.
According to Fire Chief Francis Spinelli, the two recruits are currently performing drills, house maintenance and await and study for re-entry into the academy in August.

Mayor Torrance Harvey said City Manager Todd Venning is the point of authority on all personnel matters of the city. Venning did not respond to request for comment on the report.
