Friendly Visitor Program seeks Volunteers

Posted

The Friendly Visitor Program in the Town of Crawford is looking to bring in new volunteers to assist and serve. Run through the partnership with the Jewish Family Services and Town of Crawford, the Friendly Visitor Program offers caring assistance to senior adults, and adults with disabilities throughout Orange County. Certain areas where these services are provided include Pine Bush, Bullville, Searsville, Thompson Ridge, as well as Montgomery and Wallkill.

The main goal of the program is to give these individuals the ability to live in the comfort of their own home, while volunteers assist with tasks that may not be feasible. Some examples of services that are provided by local volunteers are: transportation to appointments, help with grocery shopping, home visits, and clerical assistance.

“Volunteers only have to donate two hours of time per week, whenever it is convenient for them. Something as simple as talking on the phone could make someone’s week. Some people with disabilities or seniors are separated from their families, so this program allows them to get care from the comfort of their own living room,” said Domanie Ragni, Community Services Director for the Town of Crawford.

Each volunteer who is involved with the program has to complete a thorough training on Zoom. Training sessions last around 90 minutes, and are of no cost to the volunteer. A background check is also necessary, again with no charge. Volunteers are also insured through the Friendly Visitor program, and so far the impact has been nothing but positive.

“They just want to help. We have a wonderful group of volunteers, but we need more. We cover a multitude of local areas, and we just don’t have enough right now. Caregivers also receive respite care, and it’s important to keep this alive. If we don’t use these programs, they go away,” explained Ragni.

There is no charge for this entire service, and it has impacted the lives of not only those who are being cared for, but the volunteers as well. To get involved, contact (845)-745-0503.
